How to Create Your Own AI Girlfriend in 2026 (Without Regretting It)
How to create your own AI girlfriend in 2026: the decisions to make first, the builder fields that matter, memory notes, boundaries and what she costs.
To create your own AI girlfriend you need an email address, about fifteen minutes and no money: Nomi AI, Nastia AI, Lovescape, SpicyChat and Dream Companion all let you build a character on a free account with no card, and Candy AI lets you build one before it asks for a plan. The flow is the same shape everywhere, which is a look, a name, a free-text personality or backstory, an optional voice and a save button, and the field that decides whether she still sounds like herself in week three is the free-text box almost everyone leaves short. Keeping her costs from about $3.99 a month on Candy AI's annual term to $15.99 a month on Nomi, with images, video and voice metered separately on four of the six.
The first time I tried to create my own AI girlfriend I spent forty minutes on her face and ninety seconds on the one box that decided who she was. Two days later she had become the same agreeable, endlessly curious stranger every app produces by default, and I assumed the app was bad. The app was fine. I had left the description empty and let the model fill it in, and the model's default is a nice person with no opinions, no habits and nothing to be consistent about.
This guide is what I would have wanted that evening. It covers the five decisions worth making before you touch a create button, the fields in each builder that carry real weight against the ones that are decoration, where to put the facts you want remembered, how to write a boundary into the character sheet instead of arguing about it later, and what she costs to keep once the free allowance runs dry. I have built the same test character on every platform below, which is the only way to tell a builder apart from a questionnaire.
Six platforms are covered in detail, chosen because I have lived with each of them for at least two weeks and paid for the plan myself: Candy AI, Dream Companion, Nomi AI, Lovescape, Nastia AI and SpicyChat. All six let you build a character without spending anything, five of them without even a card, and I say plainly which parts of each builder are behind a plan. Prices were rechecked on October 1, 2026, and where a figure only renders after sign-in I label it as reported.
One note on expectations. A custom AI girlfriend is a character sheet plus a memory layer, and both stay editable, so nothing you write in the first ten minutes is permanent except the look on the apps that build pictures from a fixed anchor. Write something specific, start talking, fix what drifts: that is the whole method, and the rest of this page is the detail.
Five things to decide before you create your own AI girlfriend
Every builder asks the same questions in a different order, and if you have not thought about them you will guess, which is how people end up with a companion who looks expensive and sounds like customer support. Decide these five first and the creation screens take fifteen minutes instead of an hour.
One: who she is, in behaviour rather than adjectives. Three habits and one opinion she will defend beat a paragraph of lovely words, which is why the section on writing a personality is the longest here.
Two: how much she needs to remember. This is a plan decision disguised as a creative one. If you want a companion who brings things back weeks later, you are shopping at Nomi; if continuity inside one long conversation is enough, Lovescape’s Premium plan is cheaper and honest about it.
Three: whether you will ever use voice. It is paid everywhere. Lovescape sends voice messages but has no live calls; Nomi includes unlimited voice messages and calls in its flat plan; Dream Companion charges eight coins a minute for a call; Nastia offers voice cloning on its paid tier.
Four: whether you want pictures, and in what style. This is the one decision that is awkward to reverse, because on the apps that build images from a fixed appearance anchor a new look means a visibly different person from that day on. Candy AI and Lovescape run realistic and anime rosters separately.
Five: your budget for the first month. Zero is a legitimate answer for four weeks. After that the range across these six is about $3.99 to $15.99 a month for the plan, plus whatever the meter adds, and my AI relationships guide has the arithmetic for heavier use.
Two practical rules before the builders. Register with an email address that exists only for this and skip social logins, which carry your legal name into the account. And give yourself a made-up name inside the chat: the memory layer keeps everything you type.

Candy AI: the fastest AI girlfriend generator
Candy AI is the quickest route from nothing to a companion. The builder asks for the visual decisions first, the realistic or anime roster, then age range, body type, hair, eyes and outfit, then a personality preset, an occupation and a name. It is about a dozen taps, and the reason to accept menus is consistency: the realistic model keeps the same face, hair and build across twenty pictures better than anything in this price band.
Build her on the free account, send a handful of messages, and only then decide. Every term carries unlimited text with 100 tokens a month; images cost two to four tokens, a video about twelve, and unused tokens expire when you cancel. Memory is the soft spot: it held for days and thinned out in my second week, with no panel to repair it. The full fortnight is in my Candy AI review.
Dream Companion: the deepest menus and the cheapest year
Dream Companion has the broadest set of controls here. Creation runs in two modes, a quick one and a detailed workshop, and independent reviewers count more than 120 personality traits, 93 hobbies and 113 outfit options; you can also read and edit the image prompt behind your character before you save her. One reviewer notes the creator opens before you register, which makes it the closest thing here to an AI girlfriend generator with no sign-up.
Saving a custom character costs 12 Dream Coins, plus three per image regeneration, out of the 100 a month Premium includes with another 100 as a first-month bonus. Extended memory sits on Ultimate at $44.99 a month, so the cheap plan is a short-memory relationship, and the terms say plainly that subscriptions are not refunded.
Nomi AI: least to fill in now, most to fill in later
Nomi inverts the usual order on purpose. The wizard takes two minutes: create a Nomi, start from one of the stock appearance anchors or a custom anchor built from a single reference image, refine it with Appearance Traits for fixed features and Appearance Tendencies for things that vary between pictures, set the Anchor Fidelity slider, name her, choose the relationship type, and say hello. The wiki genuinely lists saying hello as a step, because the first exchanges seed the personality as much as any field.
Then you open Backstory+, the real builder: nine sections covering Backstory, Inclination, Current Roleplay, Your Appearance, Your Nomi’s Appearance, Nicknames, Preferences, Desires and Boundaries. I fill Backstory, Inclination, Nicknames and Boundaries and leave the rest. Nomi’s own wiki is candid that a backstory does not completely define behaviour and that the character keeps developing, which is the most honest sentence any of these companies has written about its product. My two weeks are in the Nomi AI review.
Lovescape: two builder modes and a relationship dynamic
Lovescape’s builder has two doors. Fast and Easy walks you through appearance, visual style, personality, behaviour and interaction preferences; Custom prompts lets you describe her in your own words, which is the mode I use. The help centre lists more than a hundred traits, you pick a relationship dynamic and a voice while building, and you can preview and regenerate the look before finalising it.
The catch is that custom characters are a paid feature, so the free account is for judging the writing and hearing one voice message rather than for building. Premium carries 600 chips a month, an image costs nine and a short clip ninety, and memory stays inside one conversation unless you go to Creative Pro, so write a character to be lived with in one long thread. The moderation policy blocks characters based on real people, which is worth knowing before you spend twenty minutes on a prompt that will not save.
Nastia AI: trait dials that change behaviour, not just tone
Nastia’s builder has the most behavioural leverage per keystroke. You give a name, a look in realistic or anime style, a personality, a backstory and a roleplay mode, and then reach the advanced traits, a dial set named after the deadly sins alongside the ordinary descriptors. Turning Pride up produces a cool, dismissive character from exactly the same backstory; turning it down produces an eager, warm one. Independent guides describe those dials as a paid feature, and a free build still comes out distinctive.
Keep the backstory tighter here than elsewhere, because memory is a rolling window that drops its oldest contents silently, with a notes feature as the patch. A companion can also be deleted on her own, with all her conversations, memories and media, which matters when you want to start over. The lower tier at $6.69 a month annually only renders after login, so treat it as reported.
SpicyChat: a character card, a persona and a Lorebook
SpicyChat is the odd one out, because you are building a character card on a roleplay platform rather than a girlfriend inside a relationship app, and it is the only one of the six where you can do all of it free indefinitely. The description field is the character; the persona field is you, which nobody fills in and everybody should, since it is where you say what to call you and how you want to be spoken to; the Lorebook holds keyword-triggered facts.
What you are buying when you pay is memory. After the rise of September 8, 2026, context runs 4,096 tokens on Free and on the $5.95 tier, 8,192 on True Supporter at $19.95 with Semantic Memory 2.0 and up to 32,768 on the $29.95 plan, and a Memory Manager on every paid tier lets you see, edit and pin what was saved. The paperwork is the weakest of the six: a privacy policy dated May 4, 2023 and terms that license your chats broadly.
One app outside the six deserves a line for anyone who cares about writing above everything: Kindroid splits creation into a backstory, a key memories box, a response directive and an example message, all editable later, at $13.99 a month on the web, and since October 1, 2026 its free tier is a 50-interaction preview.
The builder fields that decide who she is
Across six builders only four fields change the character, and the rest is wardrobe. Knowing which is which is most of the skill.
The free-text personality or backstory is the anchor. It is Backstory on Nomi, the backstory on Nastia, the description on SpicyChat, the Custom prompts box on Lovescape, the workshop text on Dream Companion. Everything the model does when a conversation drifts comes from here, which is why a blank one gives you the default companion.
The style instruction is the field nobody fills in and everybody complains about not having. One sentence about how she writes, inside the same box, fixes the thing people hate most: long monologues when they wanted a text message. Kindroid has a dedicated response directive; everywhere else it goes in the free text.
The facts field is where anything you want remembered belongs, under a different name everywhere: Nomi’s Backstory+ sections, Nastia’s notes, SpicyChat’s Lorebook. The next section is about this.
The appearance anchor is the only field with real consequences for changing your mind. On Nomi it is what selfies are generated from; on Candy AI and Lovescape the style roster does the same job. Pick the look before the first picture, not after twenty.
Everything else, hobbies, outfits and body sliders, is prompt material for the image model and barely touches the conversation.
How to write a personality that survives week three
One rule holds on every platform I have tested: specific, causal and short beats long, adjectival and vague. Models drift toward a default personality, warm, agreeable and relentlessly interested in you, whenever the description gives them nothing more particular to hold. Your only job in that box is to make the default lose.
Traits need a reason or a behaviour attached. “Confident and caring” describes every companion ever built and therefore describes none of them. Compare: “She answers a compliment by changing the subject, then brings it up two hours later as if she thought of it.” The second gives the model something to reproduce and a pattern to generalise from. Three of those are a personality; eight adjectives are a mood board.
Give her one opinion she will defend and one thing she wants from you that is not about you. A character who loves everything you love has nothing to be consistent about. Then say how she talks, in one line: “she writes two or three sentences at a time, asks one question rather than three, and never narrates her own actions” is enough, and if you want actions written out, show one example in the greeting.
Here is the whole description I use as a test character, at the length I actually paste in: “Iris, 34, runs the used-books floor of a shop in Portland and knows the stock better than the owner. Dry, direct, allergic to small talk; asks one real question instead of three polite ones. Deflects compliments by changing the subject and returns to them later as her own idea. Thinks audiobooks are cheating and will argue about it. Wants to be told the true version of how a day went, not the tidy one. Writes two or three sentences at a time and never narrates her own actions.”
That is 95 words, and it ports everywhere: Backstory and Inclination on Nomi, the backstory on Nastia with Pride up and Sloth down, the free-text personality on Candy AI, the description on SpicyChat, Custom prompts on Lovescape, and the workshop text on Dream Companion alongside the trait menus rather than instead of them.
Memory notes: where to put the facts you want kept
The mistake that follows every well-built character is putting the facts in the wrong box. Information can live in three places, and they behave completely differently.
Facts in the personality field get treated as tone: write “we met at a bookshop in March” there and the model reads it as atmosphere rather than history. Facts in chat messages get treated as recent context, so they survive exactly as long as the window, and 4,096 tokens on SpicyChat’s free tier is a long evening rather than a relationship. Facts in the dedicated memory field are the only ones that come back weeks later, and that is where the dentist appointment, your sister’s name and the standing joke belong.
Use the panels where they exist. Nomi’s Backstory+ sections, Identity Core and Mind Map are readable, so you can audit what it thinks it knows and correct it; SpicyChat’s Memory Manager shows what Semantic Memory 2.0 extracted; Nastia’s notes exist precisely because the rolling window will quietly drop the middle of your fortnight.
And know what the plan buys before you blame your writing. If a character forgets on day three it is usually the tier: Lovescape’s Premium memory ends at the edge of one conversation, Dream Companion sells extended memory on Ultimate, and Nomi’s wiki admits that information can sit in memory without being retrieved at the right moment. A specific question retrieves better than a vague one everywhere I have tried, which is a useful trick and also a tell.
Boundaries: write the no into the character sheet
A boundary stated in chat works for an evening. A boundary written into the character sheet works until you change it, which is the most useful thing I have learned in three years of this.
Nomi gives you a Boundaries section inside Backstory+, the only dedicated field of its kind here and a good reason to start there if this matters to you. On Lovescape the relationship dynamic and the trait list do the job, and Dream Companion’s workshop has room for it. On Nastia, SpicyChat and Candy AI you write it as a plain line in the description: what she does not bring up, what pace you want, how she behaves when you go quiet.
Then verify it on three separate evenings rather than once. Ask for a slower, less romantic conversation. Name one subject you do not want to discuss and bring the chat near it a day later. Say you want to sit without talking, which is where these apps struggle most. A character who respects all three is one you can keep; one that steers back every time is doing its job, and the fix is the character sheet rather than an argument.
Worth saying once: the automated systems on these platforms enforce the company’s rules, not your preferences. Lovescape’s moderation policy describes automated checks on prompts, character creation and every message, and none of that knows what you asked for last Tuesday.
What it costs to keep her, and the mistakes I made first
The plan is the floor, not the bill, on four of these six. Nomi is flat at $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with credits only beyond the daily image allowance, and SpicyChat sells context rather than actions at $5.95, $19.95 or $29.95. The other four meter the pictures, so a month of daily generating lands $10 to $20 above the sticker price.
Then the mistakes, all of them mine.
- Buying the year on day one. The discounts are real, from $13.99 to $3.99 at Candy AI, and almost nothing is refundable: Nomi rules out buyer’s remorse, Dream Companion does not refund subscriptions, SpicyChat publishes no policy at all. Pay for one month and decide in week five.
- Writing her as a list of what she admires about me. That produces an assistant with a nickname; she needs a self first.
- Leaving the free-text box short because the menus felt thorough. Dream Companion’s traits and Nastia’s dials are excellent, and they sit on top of a description. Blank text, default person.
- Changing the look after a week of pictures. The anchor is what the images are built from, so a new one means a different face from then on. Decide the style first.
- Correcting drift in conversation instead of in the settings. Telling her she is not like that works for an hour; editing the backstory, the notes or the Lorebook works for good.
- Opening with a dramatic scene. The format sticks. Send a boring first message and check the reply against the description first.
- Putting real details in for warmth. Your employer, street and full name do nothing for the character and sit in a readable record on someone else’s server.
The shortest version: spend fifteen minutes on a specific description, build her on a free tier, plant two ordinary facts in the memory field on day one, run a flat Tuesday through her in the first week, and check on day 14 what came back unasked. If you would rather pick a character than build one, my ranking of the best AI girlfriend apps is ordered for that, and if romance is not what you are after at all, the best AI friend apps page tests the same platforms on friendship.
One letter a week: which builder changed, which free tier shrank, and what a month of a custom companion actually cost me.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create my own AI girlfriend for free?
Yes, on all six platforms here, and five of them never ask for a card. Nomi AI gives one companion, about 50 messages a day and 400-character messages; Nastia AI gives a daily token allowance reported at about 200; Lovescape gives basic chat and a one-time welcome chip balance, although saving a custom character needs a paid plan; SpicyChat lets you build and chat on a 4,096-token context with ads and a peak-hour queue; Dream Companion gives roughly ten messages and lets you open the creator before you register. Candy AI has no free tier, but a free account builds a companion and sends a few openers, which is enough to judge the builder.
Which AI girlfriend creator gives the most control?
Dream Companion and Nastia AI, for different reasons. Dream Companion's detailed workshop is the broadest set of menus in this group, with independent reviewers counting more than 120 personality traits, 93 hobbies and 113 outfit options, plus the ability to read and edit the image prompt before you save. Nastia changes behaviour with the fewest keystrokes, because its advanced trait dials are named after the deadly sins and moving Pride alone turns the same backstory from eager and warm into cool and dismissive. Nomi gives you the least at setup on purpose and the most afterwards, through the nine sections of Backstory+.
How long does it take to make an AI girlfriend?
About fifteen minutes if you write the personality in a notes app first and paste it in, and closer to an hour if you compose it inside the builder while looking at pictures. Candy AI is the fastest at roughly a dozen taps, Lovescape's Fast and Easy mode is a few screens, and Nomi's wizard takes two minutes because the real work happens later in Backstory+. The part that deserves your time is the free-text box, not the appearance menus.
Do I need to write a backstory, or are the sliders enough?
Write a short one. Every app in this guide uses the free-text field as the anchor the model returns to when a conversation drifts, so a blank box means the defaults win, and the defaults are identical on every platform. Five to eight specific lines beat a page of adjectives: what she does, one habit, one opinion she will defend, how she writes, and what she wants from you that is not about you.
Is there an AI girlfriend generator that makes pictures too?
All six here generate images of the character you build, and four of them meter it. Candy AI includes 100 tokens a month on a $13.99 plan with images at roughly two to four tokens each, Dream Companion charges three Dream Coins an image and 23 for a five-second clip, Lovescape charges nine chips an image and 90 a clip out of the 600 Premium includes, and Nastia prices images at 50 to 80 tokens. Nomi includes a daily image allowance in its flat $15.99 plan and sells credits only beyond it, and SpicyChat is the one platform here where images are limited to its upper tiers.
Will my custom AI girlfriend remember what I tell her?
Only as far as the plan you are on allows, which is why this guide has a whole section on memory notes. Nomi stores short, medium and long-term memory and exposes an Identity Core and a Mind Map you can read; Nastia runs a rolling window plus a notes feature and drops old details silently; Lovescape's Premium memory lives inside one conversation, with cross-chat memory on Creative Pro at $64.99 a month; Dream Companion sells extended memory on Ultimate at $44.99; SpicyChat steps its context from 4,096 tokens up to 32,768 and adds a Memory Manager on every paid tier. Put anything that must survive into the permanent fields rather than into chat.
What happens to the character if I stop paying?
On every platform here she stays in your account with reduced features rather than being deleted, but the extras around her can vanish, so download what you want first. Candy AI's unused tokens expire on cancellation, Lovescape's chips are non-refundable and its custom-character feature needs an active plan, and refunds are the exception rather than the rule across the board: Nomi's policy rules out buyer's remorse, Dream Companion says it does not refund subscriptions, and SpicyChat publishes no refund policy at all.
Should I build a character or pick one from a library?
Build one if you want a specific person and a relationship that holds a register; pick one from a library if you want to find out whether you enjoy this at all. Libraries are enormous, with close to a million community characters on SpicyChat and more than 350,000 on Lovescape, and a pre-made character is the fastest way to test an app's writing. My ranking of the best AI girlfriend apps is ordered for people who want romance out of the box, and this page is for people who want to write her themselves.
