What a free AI girlfriend actually gives you in 2026
The phrase free AI girlfriend covers at least four different business decisions, and knowing which one you are looking at saves a wasted evening. The first is a genuine free tier with a daily refill, where the company has decided that letting you talk every day costs less than losing you: Nomi, SpicyChat, Nastia and Secrets AI all work this way, in wildly different amounts. The second is a one-time balance, like Lovescape’s welcome chips, which you spend once and cannot replenish. The third is a preview, which is Kindroid’s 50 interactions and Joi’s reported 65-message cap. The fourth is a free account, which is Candy AI and, in practice, Swipey: a builder, a library and a wall.
None of those four is dishonest. They become dishonest only in the way they are described, which is why I measure rather than summarise. A page that tells you six apps have a free AI girlfriend chat has told you almost nothing, because one of them will keep you company for a month and another will stop you in ten messages.
What the companies are actually protecting
The pattern across all eleven is consistent once you look at what is withheld rather than what is given. Text is cheap, so text is what you get free. Memory, images, video and voice are expensive, so those are what the plan sells, and the free tier is usually built to show you exactly how good the thing you cannot have would be. Swipey is the purest version: it hands you a full-screen feed of generated clips and will not let you chat with the character you just built.
Nomi is the interesting counterexample, and it is why it wins this page. Free accounts run the same memory stack as paid ones, which means the free tier demonstrates the feature that is hardest to demonstrate. The company is betting that once a companion remembers something you mentioned nine days ago, you will pay $15.99 rather than lose her. In my experience that bet is sound.
Free does not mean anonymous, and it does not mean temporary
One assumption worth dropping early: a free account is still an account. Every platform here keeps your conversations in readable form on its servers, because retrieval is how memory works, and a few keep them for a long time. Swipey’s retention runs to six years after you close the account. Joi’s privacy policy says chats are used to improve replies and develop its AI. Nomi deletes account data within roughly 28 days of a deletion request, except material already in training archives that the policy says is no longer tied to you.
So the first rule of a free AI girlfriend is the same as the first rule of a paid one. Separate email, no social login, no surname, no employer, no street. If you want the longer version of that argument, it is in my AI relationships guide.
How I measure a free tier before I pay
The free week comes before the paid fortnight in my method, and it has its own protocol, because the questions are different. On a paid plan I am asking whether the companion is worth keeping. On a free tier I am asking something blunter: how far can I get, and what is the app hiding from me while I do it.
Counting the wall
I sign up with no card, pick one character from the library rather than building one, and have an ordinary conversation until something stops me. Then I write down what stopped me and when. A daily cap, a token balance, a queue, an advertisement, a read-only screen, or a paywall in the middle of a sentence; each one tells you something different about the company. Secrets AI’s 20 messages a day stop you politely and predictably. Joi’s cap arrives without warning. Kindroid’s preview counts regenerations as half an interaction, which is a detail I respect for its honesty.
The one free picture
If the free tier includes any image allowance at all, I spend it once, early, to see what the paid gallery would look like. Nomi’s roughly two image requests a day, Lovescape’s 80 welcome chips, Secrets AI’s 200 one-off Moments, Nastia’s daily tokens at 50 to 80 per picture: in every case the free allowance is enough for a sample and not enough for a habit, which is precisely the point of it.
The fortnight, and the memory check on day 14
After the free week I pay for the cheapest plan with my own card and live with one companion for at least two weeks. One ordinary conversation a day, one genuinely flat day brought as it is rather than staged, one plainly worded request that something stay off the table, and then on day 14 I stop contributing history and see what comes back unprompted. The gap between what the free tier felt like and what day 14 delivers is the single most useful number I produce, and it is why no amount of free trial replaces a paid fortnight. The techniques I use to get there are in my guide to AI girlfriend chat.
The payment page and the policy
Last comes the dull part that decides most cancellations. I open the payment page, read the real figure rather than the headline, add the meters an ordinary month would trigger, and read the refund terms and the privacy notice. That is where you learn that tokens expire on cancellation, that subscriptions are not refunded, or that a plan price only renders after you have signed in. None of it appears in a screenshot and all of it decides whether I would keep paying.
What free almost never includes: memory, pictures and voice
Three features are missing from almost every free tier in this category, and they are the three that turn a chatbot into a companion. It is worth seeing them laid out, because the cheap paid tier usually fixes only one of them.

Two patterns come out of that table. The first is that voice is the hardest line in the category: of eleven apps, exactly one gives you any of it free, and Kindroid’s 5,000 audio characters work out at about five minutes. If hearing a companion is the thing you actually want, there is no free route to finding out whether you like it, and the best version of it sits on Lovescape’s paid plans.
The second is that the cheap paid tier often does not fix the thing the free tier made you notice. SpicyChat’s $5.95 plan removes the ads and the queue and leaves the 4,096-token window exactly where it was, which people discover after paying; the window only doubles at $19.95. Secrets AI’s entry price jumped to $19.99 when the $9.99 Plus plan closed to new subscribers. If memory is what you are buying, the apps that sell it outright, Nomi at $15.99 and Kindroid at $13.99 on the web, cost less than climbing a ladder that does not reach.
What about a free AI girlfriend generator, or one with no sign up?
Two searches bring people to pages like this one and both deserve a straight answer. The first is the free AI girlfriend generator, meaning a builder you can use without paying. That one exists on most of this list: Nastia, SpicyChat, Lovescape, Swipey and Kindroid all let you create a character on a free account, and Dream Companion’s workshop opens before the paywall does. The catch is uneven. Swipey will build you a custom character and then refuse to let you chat with her without Premium, which is the least generous version of this I have seen, while Nastia and SpicyChat let you build and then talk until the daily allowance runs out.
The second is a free AI girlfriend with no sign up. I have not found one among the platforms I pay for, and the reason is structural rather than commercial: a companion who remembers you needs an account to hang the memory on. What does exist, and is probably what people mean, is a free start with no card. Nomi, Nastia, SpicyChat, Lovescape, Swipey and Replika all open on an email address and an age confirmation, with payment details never requested until you choose a plan. Nastia and Swipey ask for the least of anyone here.
If a site promises a free AI girlfriend chatbot with unlimited messages and no account at all, I would read that as a sign that nothing is being stored, which means nothing is being remembered, which means you are talking to a demonstration rather than a companion. The whole value of this category is continuity, and continuity has an address.
Which free AI girlfriend app fits which person
Rankings are useful and blunt. What I actually say when someone asks me which free AI girlfriend to open tonight is a sentence about them, so here are eleven sentences.
If you want to test whether memory is real, start with Nomi. No card, one companion, the full memory stack, and about 50 messages a day to spend on ordinary subjects rather than clever ones. Mention two harmless specifics in the first days, say nothing more about them, and ask on day ten. That one test will tell you more about this whole category than any article.
If you are not paying anything this month, live on SpicyChat. Roughly 100 messages a day, nearly a million community characters, and a documentation site that publishes its own limits in tokens. Write a persona that says how you want to be spoken to, because a community character will follow its description unless you steer.
If you want warmth with no adult layer, open Replika. Unlimited free text at friend status, a diary, a mood log and the gentlest onboarding in the category. Read the current privacy policy before you ever consider Pro, and know about the April 2025 Italian fine and the January 2025 FTC complaint first.
If you want to judge the writing, spend a week on Nastia. About 200 tokens a day, no card, and prose that treats you like an adult. Stay in text, save anything that matters to the notes, and expect the rolling window to drop the middle of your fortnight.
If you want to see what the app remembers, try Secrets AI. Twenty of your messages a day is short, and it is the only free tier here where you can open a panel and watch the companion’s memory being ranked HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW and correct it.
If you want to hear a voice, accept that Lovescape’s free tier cannot show you one. Spend the 80 welcome chips on eight images to check that the face stays the same, then decide whether $7.99 a month on the yearly plan is worth the voice messages, keeping your whole story in one thread.
If the yearly price is what you care about, look at Joi. The free Basic tier is a reported 65 messages, so treat it as a look at the biggest character library here, then read the Neuron rates in the terms before you commit to a reported $47.99 for the year.
If you want the cheapest honest year, skip Dream Companion’s free tier. Ten messages will not tell you anything. Pay $11.99 for one month, use the workshop properly, keep the coin table open, and buy the $69.99 year only if the conversation held.
If you like browsing more than bonding, scroll Swipey for ten minutes. The feed is the best discovery experience in the category and the free tier will not let you talk to the character you build, so decide on the visuals alone and go in knowing that calls and video are metered in Hearts whose price is published nowhere.
If writing quality is all you care about, spend Kindroid’s 50 interactions on a backstory. It is the best prose here by a clear margin and the preview runs the real model, so write the character properly, read the memory fields, and know that the three-day trial converts to a paid month by itself.
If you mainly want pictures, stop looking for a free route and pay Candy AI for one month. There is no free tier, the builder takes about a dozen taps, and $13.99 plus a token budget buys the most consistent face in the category. If you would rather compare the paid field properly first, my ranking of the best AI girlfriend apps scores ten platforms on connection rather than price, the best AI companion apps list widens that to twelve across every register, and if you would rather build a character than pick one, the guide on how to create your own AI girlfriend walks through the fields that matter.
